FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic softball team fell to Florida Gulf Coast on Tuesday evening, losing by a score of 3-2 on a walk-off hit.
After entering the bottom of the seventh inning with a 2-0 lead, the Owls (6-5) surrendered three hits to the Eagles (5-5) leading to the eventual game-winning two-run single.
THE BEGINNING
A quiet start saw three innings go by without either team recording a hit. Making the start in the circle, senior pitcher Autumn Courtney made quick work of Eagle batters with four strikeouts.
Senior third baseman Jesiana Mora got the Owls' offense started with a double to left center. Sophomore Lily Holtje was next to step in at the plate and immediately brought home Mora with an RBI single.
THE TURNING POINT
A walk and two straight hits by FGCU loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth. With one out on the board, sophomore Bella Foran turned a flyout to left field into a double play with a strike to home to get the runner attempting to score.
The Owls threatened to score in the top of the fifth with three walks, but a lineout ended the inning. The Eagles responded with runners on second and third in the bottom frame, but the FAU defense once again prevailed.
THE FINISH
Leading off the top of the seventh inning, senior Madison Inscoe provided cushion with her first home run as an Owl to build the lead to 2-0.
The Eagles recorded two hits to put base runners on first and third, with the first run coming home on fielder's choice that led to an attempted rundown and also advanced FGCU players to second and third base. The very next batter hit a single up the middle to score both and win the game.
