DENTON, Texas – Florida Atlantic women's soccer traveled to North Texas on Thursday night, utilizing two scores after the break to come away with a 2-0 American Conference win in a tough road environment at Hunt Stadium.
The Owls (5-5-4, 3-2-0) picked up an important three conference points in spite of the Mean Green (4-6-3, 0-3-2) having double the amount of shot attempts on the night.
THE TURNING POINT
In the 75th minute,
Emerson Scott sent in a corner kick that eventually found
Olivia Surprenant on the other side of the box. Her cross went to the head of
Lola Hathorne, whose attempt hit the crossbar. But
Sutton Markee was in the perfect spot on the right side of the goal to tap it in to give the Owls a 1-0 lead.
THE FINISH
Just over six minutes later, North Texas had possession, but a deflected pass made its way out to Hathorne near midfield. Her header was right to the foot of
Hailey Santiago, who weaved past multiple Mean Green defenders, including dribbling past the oncoming UNT goalkeeper, before depositing it into the back of the net and doubling the advantage.
NOTABLES
- Markee notched her first goal of 2026, in her return to action after missing six weeks' time – and in her return to the Lone Star State. The junior midfielder hails from Allen, Texas, just 43 miles from Denton.
- Santiago's goal is her 11th of the year, which continues to lead the American. It came on her only shot of the match.
- Hathorne was credited with her fifth assist on the Santiago score.
- Lily Holden recorded her second straight clean sheet and had five saves on the night.
- This marks the first back-to-back shutouts by FAU since 2023 (0-0 draw vs. this same North Texas team on Oct. 15 and a 1-0 win over UTSA on Oct. 19). Earlier that same season was the last back-to-back clean sheet wins as well.
- The FAU starting backline of Sydney Neira and Cicely-Ann Spencer-Wickham (each playing all 90 minutes) and Georgia Cousins and Lily Paisant (71 minutes apiece) helped Holden defend against the 14 UNT shot attempts, eight of which came in the second half.
