TULSA, Okla. – The Florida Atlantic women's soccer team extended its win streak to three consecutive matches – all in American Conference play, and all shutouts – with a 3-0 road win Sunday afternoon at Hurricane Soccer Stadium over Tulsa.
The Owls' (6-5-4, 4-2-0) clean sheet win over the Golden Hurricane (6-6-2, 1-3-1) marks the first such streak of three matches since 2022, and for the first time in conference play since 2020 (the season played in the spring of 2021).
THE TURNING POINT
FAU took the lead in the 19th minute when
Lola Hathorne successfully converted a penalty kick attempt, and the visitors held that advantage into the halftime break. The Owls outshot the Golden Hurricane 5-3 in the first half, and held a slim 2-1 edge on shots on goal.
THE FINISH
The Owls' upper hand doubled in the 64th minute on freshman
Sephora Joachim's goal, assisted by Hathorne. A little over two minutes later, Tulsa had a PK attempt of their own, but it was saved by FAU keeper
Lily Holden, one of her five saves on the afternoon. The cherry on top came in the 74th when
Sutton Markee's score made for the final goal.
NOTABLES
- Hathorne is up to 16 points in 15 matches, on five goals and six assists. Only four other American players have reached the five and five thresholds thus far this season.
- Joachim logged her second goal of the season, as did Markee – incidentally, also her second in as many matches.
- All told, FAU held Tulsa to just four shots in the second half in yet another conference clean sheet, Holden's third straight. She's been part of four of the team's five shutouts this season.
- The Owls defense now tallied 270:69 of scoreless play.
- The previous three-match shutout streaks were non-conference in 2022 (4-0 against Detroit Mercy on Aug. 21; 0-0 versus Miami on Aug. 25, and 1-0 on the road against South Florida on Aug. 28); and in conference play in spring 2021 (March 26, a 1-0 win hosting Charlotte; April 2, a 2-0 win at Middle Tennessee; and April 9, 3-0 at home versus FIU).
