BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic men's tennis picked up its first win of 2026 with a 5-2 victory over in-state foe North Florida on Thursday evening.

THE BEGINNING
The two teams took to the courts with the overcast skies beginning to break as the temperatures began a downward spiral into the low 50s with wind gusts up to 27 mph and a feels-like temperature of 42. The Owls battled that wind through competitive doubles play by winning doubles courts #1 and #2 to secure the match's first point.

THE MIDDLE
Holding the 1-0 advantage, sophomore Segundo Goity Zapico captured court #2 with a straight-set 6-1, 6-1 win. UNF cut the lead in half, winning court #3. Jan Kusy gave up the first set of his match but captured the next two for the 1-6, 6-2, 6-1 victory and a 3-1 Owl lead, just one court win away from clinching the match.

THE END
Sophomore Marek Pazdera gave the Owls the win over the Osprey with a 6-3, 7-5 court #6 victory. As is customary early in the season, despite the match being decided, the teams completed on all singles courts, which allowed FAU junior Mark Havlicek time to capture court #1. His first collegiate match on the top court.

With the 5-2 win, FAU moves to 1-0 while UNF falls to 1-2. The Owls improve their all-time series to 9-5.

QUOTABLE
"Today was a solid test for our team against a strong UNF squad," said Ricardo Gonzalez, FAU's Director of Tennis. "While it's always a relief to secure a win, we have areas to improve. The conditions were challenging – extremely windy and cold. We need to step up our game as we prepare for the upcoming road trip."
