Red Out, Research Recognition Highlight Football Gameday on Saturday

BOCA RATON, Fla. – When Florida Atlantic football hosts Memphis for a Red Out on Saturday night at 7 p.m. at Flagler Credit Union Stadium, several activities are planned to honor and recognize the efforts on campus that helped the university achieve its elite R-1 status and produce FAU's first Top 100 ranking in U.S. News & World Report's annual list of top public universities.
The university's meteoric rise in the U.S. News & Report rankings over the last decade was punctuated this week when it was ranked as a "Top 100 Public University" for the first time in school history – up three spots over last year and 40 spots since 2019. That honor comes just months after FAU celebrated the distinction of earning R-1 status from the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education – the most prestigious research accolade in the country.
The Fan Zone area outside the stadium, which opens at 4:30 p.m., will include interactive exhibits, fan-friendly activations and giveaways from the university's prestigious Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute (HBOI), the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science and the School of Environmental, Coastal and Ocean Sustainability (ECOS), which are each engaging in world-class environmental, marine and oceanographic studies and research.
A highlight of the Fan Zone will be HBOI's one-of-a-kind educational tool: a life-sized inflatable humpback whale. Through its traveling program, participants of all ages can meet, and even step inside, a humpback whale to gain an up-close look at its anatomy, while also learning about whale biology and the ongoing research that helps us better understand and protect these amazing creatures.
HBOI is in the midst of a naming contest for the inflatable whale and will announce the winning name during Saturday's game. The voting is open until Saturday night and five lucky winners will be chosen from the entries to receive an FAU prize pack. To enter the naming contest, click here.
Other Fan Zone activations include displays from various departments within the College of Science, ECOS, HBOI and a pair of marine boats utilized by FAU for research. During the game, leaders and faculty from these units will be recognized on the field. Fan Zone activations are weather permitting.
Saturday's game is a Red Out, with FAU students receiving 5,000 free red t-shirts upon entry, courtesy of Phil Smith Acura, Phil Smith Kia and the FAU Student Government Association.
The game also marks the debut of $1 hot dogs and $1 waters promotion for FAU students. FAU students must show their ID at either of the Paradise Pricing stands to purchase the discounted items. All stadium concession stands are cashless.
