No. 15 Florida Atlantic Sweeps UTEP; Falls to FGCU on Day One of Capri Classic

BOCA RATON, Fla. – The No. 15 Florida Atlantic beach volleyball team opened up play in their Capri Classic, sweeping UTEP, 5-0, but falling in a hard-fought 3-2 battle against FGCU on Friday at the FAU Beach Volleyball Complex.
After going 1-1 on the day, Florida Atlantic moved to 14-12 overall and 3-1 in CUSA play, while UTEP fell to 11-12 overall and 2-2 in CUSA play, and FGCU improved to 15-10 on the season.
The Sandy Owls opened the day strong, earning their fourth 5-0 sweep of the season against the UTEP Miners. Kate McLaughlin and Julie Honzovicova got things started for FAU, picking up a straight-set win on court two, 21-17, 21-13. Reese Edwards and Kendall Mignerey extended the Sandy Owls' lead to 2-0, taking a two-set victory at the No. 4 position, 21-16, 21-15. Ashleigh Adams and Marketa Svozilova clinched the match for FAU, taking a 21-11, 21-11 straight-set win on court one. Cameron Knifton and Shayna Wolf secured the Sandy Owls' fourth point of the match with another straight-set sweep on court five, 21-15, 21-10. Klaire VanDeusen and Mia Scanlon closed out the Sandy Owls' sweep, winning 21-19, 21-17 on court three.
In their match against the Eagles, Kate McLaughlin and Julie Honzovicova once again secured the Sandy Owls' first point of the match, taking a three-set battle, 21-17, 18-21, 15-11, on court two. FGCU tied things up at 1-1 after taking a back-and-forth three-set battle on court four. Ashleigh Adams and Marketa Svozilova pushed the Sandy Owls back in front, 2-1, after earning their second sweep of the day, 21-17, 21-19, at the No. 1 position. The Eagles tied the match once again at 2-2 after claiming a straight-set win on court five. Florida Atlantic couldn't close out the match as FGCU took the 3-2 contest after claiming the final point on court three in straight sets.
