BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic baseball won the series opener over Memphis 2-1 on Friday night at the FAU Baseball Stadium. Sophomore starter
Trey Beard, a Golden Spikes midseason honoree, posted another dominant outing on the mound to lead the Owls (24-9, 6-4 AAC) to a fifth straight victory.
Offense was hard to come by on Friday night as Beard and Memphis starter Seth Garner took center stage. Beard struck out the side on 13 pitches in the first inning and added another strikeout in the second. The Tigers muscled a run across in the third after a pair of two-out hits before the Owls responded in the ensuing half-inning.
Jake Duer lined a two-out single up the middle to score
Brando Leroux. FAU would take the lead one inning later on a ground out by
Ayden Garcia.
The Owls would not relinquish that lead, thanks in large part to Beard. After the two-out single in the third, the sophomore lefthander would concede just one more hit in the next four frames.
Beard turned it over to the bullpen in the eighth.
Carter Holjes recorded the first two outs before
MJ Bollinger entered and stranded the tying run at second base. Bollinger then completed the four-out save with a clean ninth inning.
- Beard improved to 6-0 after seven innings and one run allowed on three hits. He struck out 11 and walked two.
- Bollinger issued a walk in the ninth but pitched around it to record his eighth save. He is now tied for the AAC lead in that category.
The Owls will look to win the series on Saturday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. on ESPN+. To purchase FAU tickets, call 1-866-FAU-OWLS or click
