BOCA RATON, Fla. – A five-run fourth inning propelled the No. 22 Florida Atlantic softball team to its 11th straight win, a come-from-behind 10-5 victory over Charlotte.
The Owls (29-4, 8-0) clinched the series over the 49ers (14-18, 2-6) with their fourth straight comeback win. FAU connected for 13 hits at the plate, led by a 3-for-3 day from freshman outfielder Bella Foran, and scored double-digit runs in bunches.
Senior pitcher Ainsley Lambert continues to take her game to new heights in her closer role, pitching a season-high 4.2 innings and stepping up for her fourth win in four games. She moves to 6-0 on the season to add to her nation-leading seven saves.
It did not take long for Owl batters to get hot. Redshirt sophomore outfielder Kylie Hammonds was a leadoff walk in the bottom of the first and scored off a double from junior Chloe Yeatts. The very next batter, junior third baseman Jesiana Mora, launched her fourth home run of the season to score both and build a 3-0 lead.
The 49ers responded with four runs in the top of the second to go up 4-3 before adding a solo home run in the fourth to take a two-run advantage. Lambert, who had checked in the prior inning, retired the next nine batters to spark the comeback.
Mora got the bottom of the fourth inning started with a base hit up the middle, later coming home off a sacrifice fly. Sophomore Bella Cimino came off the bench to deliver a hit to score the tying run, with three more singles bringing home three more scores.
One more run was found with Yeatts delivering her second double of the afternoon, leaving the inning with an 8-5 Owls advantage.
Lambert, along with multiple highlight plays in the outfield from Foran, kept the defense off the field with consecutive three-up, three down innings.
With two outs on the board, the Owls added a couple of more runs in the bottom of the fifth with three straight hits, with a Foran single followed by a triple from Hammonds and culminating in a hit from sophomore shortstop Kiley Channell for the seventh unanswered run.
