BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Florida Atlantic men's tennis team returns home to play host to FGCU and Charlotte after an impressive 2-1 road swing that included a match versus the nation's back-to-back champion, #3 Virginia. Both matches are scheduled to be played under the lights with a 5 p.m. first serve, facing FGCU on Friday, Feb. 2 and Charlotte on Saturday, Feb. 3.
The Charlotte contest is a schedule change due to expected weather.
The Owls are 5-1 on the year and have shown themselves to be a strong doubles team, building a 9-5 record overall and capturing four doubles points in six matches played. The doubles team of
Jiri Jenicek and
Simon Myslivec have a team leading 5-1 record while
Alberto Colas and
Juan Martin Jalif have built a 4-1 mark. FAU is winning the singles courts at a similar clip, capturing nearly 70% of the matches played.
Jalif has proven to be the most difficult to beat, holding a perfect 5-0 singles record despite the burden of several game clinching points lying on his shoulders and needing tiebreakers to assure the win. Colas is 4-1 on the season on court one while
Mark Havlicek and Jenicek are both 4-1.
The Owls are 12-4 all-time versus FGCU and were a 5-2 winner last season, moving the current winning streak against the Eagles to seven. Florida Atlantic and Charlotte are first year members of the American Athletic Conference (AAC), where they do not play a full AAC schedule and rely upon the season-ending tournament to award a champion. The Owls versus 49ers all-time series stands at 3-3.
