BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic volleyball battled but fell in three sets, 3-0 (25-27, 21-25, 18-25), against the Temple Owls in their first AAC road match of the season at McGonigle Hall on Sunday.
Florida Atlantic falls to 10-6 overall and 2-2 in AAC play, while Temple moves to 7-9 on the season and 1-3 in league play.
The opening set was a back-and-forth battle between Florida Atlantic and Temple. Florida Atlantic held a 15-14 advantage after a kill from
Madison Dyer, but Temple answered back with a 4-1 run to take an 18-16 lead and spark a Florida Atlantic timeout. Out of the timeout, the Owls brought the set even at 19, 20, and 21, but back-to-back Florida Atlantic errors gave Temple the 23-21 lead as the Owls called another timeout. The Owls rallied on a 3-1 run to deny Temple the set point and even the first at 24-24 as Temple called its first timeout of the match.
Victoria Hensley scored on a solo block to give the Owls set point at 25-24, however, Temple scored three points in a row to capture set one, 27-25.
Temple opened set two on a 6-3 run, but the Owls rallied back to eventually tie things up at 13. Florida Atlantic held a 19-18 advantage following a kill from
Natalie Depaula, but Temple went on a 7-2 run to close out the set, taking the 25-21 win and the 2-0 match advantage.
Florida Atlantic looked to rally in the third, producing a 4-1 run to open the set. The Owls maintained a one-point advantage at 8-7, but Temple then went on an 11-4 run to lead 18-12. Florida Atlantic battled back within three after a kill from
Kayla Richardson, 19-16, but the Owls couldn't find an answer to Temple as they eventually closed the match on a 6-2 run, 25-18, to take the straight-set win.
- Katelynn Robine and Romina Cornelio led the Owls in the match, recording 14 and 11 kills, respectively. In addition to leading the team in kills, Robine also posted a team-best .321 hitting percentage.
- Victoria Hensley dished out a match-high 37 assists, while Isabelle Northam led the Owls back row with a match-high 12 digs.
The Owls continue their three-game road stretch next weekend as they head to Tulsa, Oklahoma on Friday, Oct. 11 for a 7:30 p.m. ET first serve against the Tulsa Golden Hurricane.
