BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic's men's tennis team (3-0) shutout Stetson (0-1) 7-0 on Saturday afternoon to tally a perfect season-opening home record before the Owls take to the road for the first time next week.
It was the first match of the 2024 seasons, both men and women, that was not affected by weather. The clear blue skies and 74-degree temperatures signaled smooth sailing and that is exactly what the FAU men's team did on Saturday.
The Owls were credited with the match's first point following 6-2 wins on both courts one and two. Court three was tied at 4-4 and did not finish, playing under clinch rules. Singles play began shortly thereafter with all matches scheduled to be played out.
One thing can be said for the Owls: they are consistent. FAU has secured the doubles point in the first three matches.
Alberto Colas continued to play strong tennis winning his third match in as many opportunities in quick straight sets. He moved his winning streak to seven, including his C-USA results from a year ago.
John Bernard has clinched the match for Florida Atlantic in the last two outings while
Juan Martin Jalif has proven he can battle back and that he can win the close matches, needing at least one of the sets to move to a tiebreaker in each of his last two outings. His wins also closed out the match for the Owls in a positive fashion in each of the last two matches as well.
The Owls move to 3-0 on the year and will hope to prove just as difficult to defeat on the road as they have proven to be at home.
