BOCA RATON, Fla. – Nolan Schanuel has been named as one of 25 semifinalists for USA Baseball's Golden Spikes Award, given annually to the best amateur baseball player in the nation. Finalists will be selected via fan voting on GoldenSpikesAward.com. Fans can vote up to 25 times per day (per device) beginning May 22 until June 5.
Â
Schanuel dominated the preseason headlines in the fall and winter, earning preseason all-american recognition from four different major publications in addition to Conference USA Preseason Player of the Year from the league's coaches.
Â
Even with the heavy burden of preseason expectations, Schanuel is enjoying a career year. He ranks first in Division I in batting average (.460), on base percentage (.623), and walks (67; FAU single season record). He's third in slugging percentage (.888). The Boynton Beach native also leads C-USA in hits (86), runs (68), and total bases (166). He enters the first game of the C-USA postseason tournament having reached base in 51 straight games – tied for the longest active streak in Division I.
Â
Schanuel is the third player in program history to be named as a Golden Spikes semifinalist, joining C.J. Chatham in 2016 and Mike McKenna in 2008.
