BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University volleyball team continues its C-USA opening-weekend as the Owls host the UTEP Miners for a Sunday matchup at 12 p.m. inside FAU Arena.
- The Owls enter Sunday's contest with a 10-3 overall record and a 0-1 mark in C-USA play, as FAU is just coming off a C-USA opening 3-0 loss against the North Texas Mean Green.
- Head coach Fernanda Nelson has led the Owls to a 149-129 overall record over her 11 seasons in Boca Raton.
- FAU's sophomore trio of Valeria Rosado, Klara Zarnovicka, and Katelynn Robine lead the Owls offense, recording 151 (3.60 per set), 112 (2.73 per set), and 106 kills (3.12 per set) so far during the 2022 campaign.
- Fellow sophomore Noelle Stephens has been the Owls' leading setter this season, dishing out team-high 416 assists, averaging 9.90 pet set.
- Senior Camryn Vogler and Rosado lead FAU in digs with 144 (3.43 per set) and 115 (2.74 per set), respectively.
- Senior Lauryn Green leads the Owls in blocks with a team-best 34 denials, while Zarnovicka has also been a big threat at the net for FAU this season, recording 31 blocks.
- The Owls fell in their C-USA opener against the North Texas Mean Green on Friday 3-0.
- Robine led the Owls with nine kills in the contest, while Stephens tallied 24 assists, Vogler recorded a team-high 11 digs, and Zarnovicka posted three blocks in the contest.
- UTEP enters Sunday's contest with a 7-7 and a 1-0 record in C-USA play after the Miners just earned a 3-2 win over the FIU Panthers in their C-USA opener on Friday.
- The Miners are led by head coach Ben Wallis, who has coached UTEP to a 54-37 record over in his four seasons in El Paso.
- UTEP has four miners with triple-digit kills this season with Serena Patterson leading the way with 146 kills, averaging 2.43 pet set. Torrance Lovesee and Sara Pustahija follow just behind Patterson, with 137 kills each, with Lovesee averaging 249 per set, while Pustahija has averaged 2.36 per set. Marian Ovalle rounds out the Miners offensive presence with 109 kills (1.91 pet set) this season.
- UTEP has been utilizing a pair of setters this season with Mattie Gantt and Hande Yetis. Gantt leads the Miners with 277 assists (4.78 pet set), while Yetis follows just behind at 25 assists (4.92 pet set) in 2022.
- Defensively, UTEP is led on the backrow by Hula Crisostomo with a team-best 254 digs (4.23 per set), while the Miners' conference-leading blocking crew at the net is paced by Alianza Darley, who has record 75 blocks (1.25 pet set) this season.
The Owls lead the all-time series against the Miners, 5-2. FAU also holds a perfect 3-0 record for games played on the Owls home hardwood in Boca Raton.
FAU will hit the road next weekend for the Owls first road trip of the conference season, visiting UTSA on Friday Sept. 30 for a 7 p.m. ET first serve, and then closing out the weekend in Houston at Rice on Sunday, Oct. 2 at 2 p.m. ET.
