With the win, the Owls improve to 8-5 overall and 1-1 in American play, while the Roadrunners fall to 9-4 on the season and 0-2 in league play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
UTSA took the early lead in the first, opening the match on a 15-8 run to hold the lead at the first set technical break. The Owls then went on a 3-1 run, capped off by kills from
Anna Hartman and
Libby Ashline, to battle back within five, 16-11; however, FAU just couldn't find an answer to the Roadrunners in the first, dropping the opening set 25-14.
The two squads fought back-and-forth through a 9-9 tie to open set two. The Roadrunners held a 14-12 advantage at the second set media break. After their second timeout of the set, the Owls rallied from an 18-14 deficit to battle back within two at 21-19, after another kill from Hart. The Roadrunners pushed their lead back out to 23-19; however, the Owls once again rallied to cut the lead to two at 24-22 after back-to-back kills from
Sequoia Layne. However, an Owl service error closed out the set as UTSA took the second 25-22 and the 2-0 lead.
Like the first two sets, UTSA held the early advantage in the third, leading 15-11 at the technical timeout. Out of the break, the Owls rallied off a 7-4 stretch to battle back within one, 19-18, and force the Roadrunners to call a timeout. After battling through ties at 19, 20, 21, 22, and 23, a Hart kill and a Roadrunner attacking error closed out the Owls' 25-23 win to secure the set win, 2-1.
The Owls opened the fourth set strong, producing an 8-4 run, capped off by another kill from Hart, to force an early Roadrunner timeout. FAU continued its dominant play, extending its lead to seven, 15-8, through the fourth set media break. UTSA got two back to cut the Owls' lead to five at 16-11; however, FAU answered back with four unanswered points, capped off by kills from Hart and
Libby Ashline, to extend its lead back to nine at 20-11. The Roadrunners couldn't cut into the Owls' lead over the remainder of the set as the Owls rode their nine-point advantage to a 25-16 set win to even the match at 2-2 and force a final deciding fifth set.
After battling through a 3-3 stalemate to open the fifth, the Owls scored three unanswered off a block from Hartman and Layne, an ace from
Kierstin Bevelle, and a kill from Hartman to take the 6-3 lead and force a UTSA timeout. The Owls continued to extend their lead, producing a 3-1 run out of the timeout to push their advantage to five, 9-4, and sparking UTSA to call its second and final timeout of the set. Florida Atlantic would maintain its advantage over the remainder of the match, eventually closing out the 3-2 reverse sweep with a 15-9 win in the fifth.
