BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University men's and women's swimming & diving team will open their 2022-23 season on Friday against Indian River State. The meet will begin at 2:30 p.m.
The Owls are led by Head Coach
Lara Preacco as she enters her ninth season at the helm of the team. This will mark the first season for the women's team in the American Athletic Conference, while the men will again compete in the Coastal Collegiate Sports Association. Team captains for this season are
Maggie Casey and
Kirsten Hobson for the women, along with and
Ethan Crim and
Jackson Kirk for the men.
Highlights in the schedule for home meets at FAU this season include the Alumni & Family Meet on Saturday Oct. 15 as part of FAU's Homecoming Weekend, as well as the New Year Extravaganza to be held on Sunday Jan. 1.
FAU will travel to Fairfax, Virginia to compete in the Patriot Invitational hosted by George Mason University from Nov. 17-19. Other meets on the road include competing in the Toyota US Open in Greensboro, North Carolina Nov. 30-Dec. 3 and traveling to Gainesville to compete against the University of Florida on Friday Jan. 13.
The American Athletic Conference Championships for the women will occur Feb. 15-18 in Dallas while the men's CCSA Championships will take place in Knoxville, Tenn. on the same days.
Men
For the third time out of four years, the men's team finished in second in the 2022 CCSA Championships. The team scored a total of 903.5 points.
Rateb Hussein was named Most Outstanding Performer of the Meet while
Timo Paisley was named Most Outstanding Freshman of the meet. Hussein won the conference title in the 100 free with a time of 43.78 as well as the 100 fly with a time of 47.07. Paisley tallied a first-place finish in the 500 free with a time of 4:26.97. The men also set an FAU record in the 400 free relay, where Hussein,
Alec Peckmann, Peter Tanner Jr., and
Logan Thornsberry recorded a time of 2:58.57
Women
The women's team finished fifth at the 2022 Conference USA Swimming & Diving Championships with 425 total points. The Owls earned a total five bronze medals, highlighted by
Alicia Mora breaking the school record on the 3-meter dive (336.25) and earning a score of 260.10 on the 1-meter. Nikki Culina broke a freshman record in the 100 breast (1:01.95) and recorded a time of 2:14.57 in the 200 breast.
The Owls will next compete at the TYR Fall Classic hosted by FIU Oct. 7-8.
