BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University softball team defeated Louisiana Tech on Saturday in game two of the series by a 6-4 tally.
The win clinches the series, which is the Conference USA opener, as FAU took last night's game by a 3-0 tally.
The victory also pulls head coach
Joan Joyce within two of 1,000 career wins. Joyce, who has been at the helm of the program the last 28 years, would become the 25
th coach in NCAA Division I history to reach the 1,000-win plateau. The earliest the Owls could get Joyce to 1,000 would be next Friday, March 18, at North Texas.
FAU (13-13, 2-0 C-USA) jumped on Louisiana Tech (15-10, 0-2 C-USA) with a pair in the first inning. FAU put together four consecutive singles, and RBI base knocks from
Myah Murray and
Riley Olson got the two-spot on the board early.
The Owls added another in the second. After
Sommer Baker led off with a triple to right center,
Cammeo Presutti knocked her in with a base hit.
Baker delivered a big blow in the next inning. With two on and one out, she skied a three-run home run down the left field line. The big fly was her second of the season, and Baker finished the night 2-2 with 3 RBI, two runs scored and a hit by pitch.
Starting pitcher
Gabby Sacco cruised along through the first five innings. She held LA Tech off the scoreboard until the Lady Techsters got two in the top of the sixth. A two-out home run in the seventh made it interesting, yet Sacco held on to improve to 7-3 this season. She leads the Owls in wins and ERA (2.04). She struck out four while not walking any tonight.
The win tonight also surpasses FAU's win total from all of the 2021 season. The Owls will go for the sweep at 1 p.m. tomorrow.
