BOCA RATON, Fla. – The FAU softball team will host its annual Strike Out Cancer Tournament this weekend from Feb. 24-27.
Â
Competing this weekend will be Kentucky, Michigan State, Jacksonville, Long Island and Columbia. The Owls will begin the weekend's tilt against Jacksonville Thursday at 3:30 p.m. followed by Kentucky at 6 p.m. FAU will then face Columbia Friday night at 7 p.m. and Michigan State at 7 p.m. on Saturday night, before wrapping up the weekend against Long Island Sunday at 1 p.m.
Â
FAU went 2-3 last weekend at The Spring Games, highlighted by a 1-0 win over Maryland and a 9-5 win over Monmouth. Against Maryland,
Lynn Gardner led the efforts with a complete game shutout in the circle. The senior left-hander showed impeccable command, allowing no walks while striking out four.
Â
The offense opened up against Monmouth with a season-high nine runs. That was the most for FAU since April 28 of last year in the 12-4 win over North Florida.
Riley Ennis went 2-2 with two RBI, while
Myah Murray and
Holley Peluso each tallied two RBI.
Â
- FAU has faced four out of the five teams in this weekend's tournament before, with the lone first-time matchup being LIU. FAU is 9-5 all time against Jacksonville, 0-9 against Kentucky, 3-0 against Columbia and 18-9 against Michigan State
- Sara Berthiaume is off to a hot start at the plate with a team-leading .375 batting average. The FAU left fielder has three multi-hit games this year, including a 4-4 game in the season opener against Louisville
- Gardner has been reliable in the circle, pitching to a 1.44 ERA, good for fifth in Conference USA. Gardner has tallied three complete games on the young season
- Olivia Peterson has shown an impressive arm behind the plate. The FAU catcher has thrown out seven attempted base-stealers this year which is leading Conference USA
- FAU has recorded four triples this season which tops the conference. Sommer Baker leads all C-USA players with two, while Maya Amm and Berthiuame have both legged out one three-bagger
FAU is 12 wins away from getting head coach
Joan Joyce to the 1,000 career win plateau. Joyce would become only the 27
th coach in NCAA Division I history and the 43rd coach across all divisions to reach the 1,000-win milestone.
