FAU Tops Monmouth, 9-5

LEESBURG, Fla. â The FAU softball team closed The Spring Games with a 9-5 victory over Monmouth on Sunday. The win improves the Owls' record to 3-6 on the season.

FAU jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. With runners on second and third, Myah Murray delivered an RBI sacrifice fly, then Riley Ennis laced an RBI double to left.

Owls' starter Donnie Gobourne got in trouble in the third inning, and Monmouth loaded the bases. Gabby Sacco entered in relief and escaped the jam after entering with one out. She forced a pop up to get the second out, then the last out was a lineout to Murray at the hot corner.

FAU blew the game open with two runs in the fourth, two in the fifth and three in the sixth. In the fourth, Cunningham delivered a rare two-RBI sacrifice fly. A fly ball to right bounced off the diving Hawks' right fielder but was caught by the center fielder. By rule, the runners can advance on the first touch. Sommer Baker and Maya Amm scored to make it 4-1.

The Owls will return to the diamond to host the Strikeout Cancer Tournament next weekend. FAU opens with Jacksonville and Kentucky on Feb. 24.
