BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic volleyball team (13-12, 3-10 C-USA) fell in four sets against the Charlotte 49ers (10-14, 4-8 C-USA) on senior day at FAU Arena.
The 49ers jumped out to a 2-0 lead to open the contest but kills from
Klara Zarnovicka and
Valeria Rosado quickly evened things at 2-2. After Charlotte retook the lead, the Owls kept the set within three points at 14-11 off another Zarnovicka kill, but the 49ers scored four straight to extend their lead to 18-11. FAU cut the deficit back down to five at 20-15 off an
Aniya Harvey ace, but a 5-3 Charlotte run closed out the opening frame to give the 49ers the 1-0 lead, 25-18.
Charlotte scored three unanswered to open the second 3-0. Back-to-back kills from
Katelynn Robine brought the Owls back within one at 3-2. The Owls kept battling and kept the deficit down to two at 10-8 off a kill from
Lauryn Green, but the 49ers then broke away scoring five unanswered to extend their lead to seven, 15-8. Charlotte continued their run to eventually extend their lead to 21-10 following a 6-2 run, but the Owls rallied to outscore the 49ers 5-4 over the remainder of the set, however, it was just a little too late for the Owls as the 49ers captured the second 25-15, giving Charlotte the two-set advantage heading to the third, 2-0.
FAU struck first in the third, off a Rosado kill, to set the tone for the set. Charlotte responded to take a 5-4 lead, but the Owls locked in to score five straight, capped by a Zarnovicka kill, to take a four-point advantage, 9-5. The 49ers got two back, but another 4-0 FAU run extended the Owls lead to 13-7. Charlotte cut the Owls' advantage down to two at 18-16, but FAU outscored Charlotte 7-2 to close out the third, giving the Owls the 25-18 set win and forcing a fourth, 2-1.
The Owls kept the fourth close at 4-3 after a Rosado kill, but the 49ers responded on a 7-1 run to extend their lead back out to seven, 11-4. The Owls kept battling to try and close the gap to force a fifth, but FAU just couldn't find an answer to the 49ers attack as Charlotte would take the fourth, 25-16, and capture the four-set win, 3-1.
