BOCA RATON, Fla. – Casey O'Connor of the Florida Atlantic University women's cross country team has been named the Conference USA Female Cross Country Athlete of the Week, the league announced on Tuesday. This marks the junior's first athlete of the week award of her collegiate career and the first time an Owl has won cross country athlete of the week since 2019.
Â
"I am so happy that Casey is receiving recognition for all of the hard work she is putting in," said head coach
Alex Smolka. "It hasn't been an easy journey for her, but she is the epitome of making lemonade out of lemons. With the combination of her incredible work ethic and her talent, her future in this sport looks very bright!"
Â
O'Connor's honor is well earned after a career best night last Friday at the FAU Invitational. She finished in second place out of 79 runners in the 5K race with a time of 18:22.0. This broke her previous personal record, which she set in the previous race, by over 30 seconds. Her time was also the second-best time ever recorded by the team on the South County Regional Park course.
Â
FAU has one more race scheduled for the regular season at USF on Friday, Oct. 14 before shifting their focus to the C-USA Championships on Oct. 29
