MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Florida Atlantic University men's soccer fell short against Memphis by a 2-0 final on Saturday night. The Owls are one point out of an AAC playoff spot with two matches remaining in the regular season.
Â
After a cagey first half, both sides opened up in the second 45. A diving save by FAU goalkeeper Neil Strauber in the 50th minute kept the score tied. At the other end, Zach Hassell had a pair of chances but a header off a Blake Dean cross was denied and moments later a shot from just outside the penalty area drifted past the far post.
Â
In the 68th minute, Dean played in Fritz Kleiner from just outside the six-yard box. Memphis goalkeeper Collin Welsh continued to stand tall though with a point-blank stop.
Â
The Tigers finally found the breakthrough in the 70th minute. Spencer Mallion and a Memphis attacker got their feet tangled in the box and a penalty was awarded. Jovan Prado converted past Strauber for the game's opening goal. Four minutes later, the Tigers doubled the lead on a rebound from in close.
Â
The Owls finished with eight shots, two of which were on target. Memphis forced five saves from Strauber.
Â
FAU returns to action next Friday at home for senior night against No. 20 SMU. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
