BOCA RATON (FAUSports.com) --Â The Florida Atlantic University men's basketball team holds sole possession of first place in the Conference USA East Division. The Owls will look to remain in that position when they travel to Texas for a two-game road swing this week.
FAU will be at the Don Haskins Center Thursday evening for a 7 p.m. MT/9 p.m. ET tipoff vs. the UTEP Miners in El Paso, Texas. The Owls will conclude their Texas trip Saturday at UTSA in San Antonio.
In addition to being in first place in their division, the Owls are off to their best start ever in Conference USA action at 4-2. FAU hasn't been 4-2 in conference play through six games since the 2012-13 season, when the Owls were members of the Sun Belt Conference.
FAU has averaged 81.7 points per game over their three-game winning streak at home, bolstered by a 96-point effort against Charlotte last Monday. The Owls are paced by a trio of guards. Michael Forrest is the team's leading scorer at 14.1 points per game. He is averaging 2.7 3-pointers per contest. Alijah Martin averaged 13.7 points per game and is tied for the team lead with 5.4 rebounds per contest. Bryan Greenlee is scoring 10.2 points per game and is also the teams' top playmaker, averging 3.5 assists per contest.
The FAU-UTEP tilt will be heard in the South Florida area on Fox Sports 640 AM and will be streamed on CUSA TV.

The Owls were 16-of-21 from 3-point range vs. Charlotte last week for a .762 percentage from behind the arc. That crushed the previous 3-pt FG % school record of .706 (12-of-17, 2.18.06 vs. Kennesaw St.) which stood for nearly 16 years.
The Owls are one of the more prolific 3-point shooting teams in C-USA. FAU ranks No. 3 in the league and No. 51 in the nation in 3FG/game, averaging 9.1. The Owls are also No. 5 in C-USA and No. 88 in the nation in 3FG%, hitting at a .357 clip.
Cleaning the Glass
Rebounding has been a point of emphasis for the Owls the last two seasons, and the message has been received. The Owls are currently No. 1 in CUSA and No. 58 in the nation in rebound margin at +5.2. In all but three games this year, FAU has tied or outrebounded the opposition. FAU has owned the edge by 10 or more six times, with a high of +17 (at UNM). On the offensive glass, FAU is No. 4 in CUSA and No. 103 in the nation at 11.3 offensive rebounds per game.
A-Mart Special
Alijah Martin has stepped up in a big way during his second year as an Owl. After averaging 4.2 points in his first season, the second-year freshman is putting up 13.7 ppg this season. Martin has scored in double digits in nine straight games and 15 of 19 games this year. He tallied 10+ points just 4 times in 21 games last year.
His 5.4 rebounds per game is tied for the team lead, as are his 30.4 minutes played per contest.
Nelly's Nice Outing
Johnell Davis, known by his teammates as Nelly, made a huge impact off the bench in Saturday's win over Marshall. FAU's 7-0 spurt that led to the victory was fueled by 5 from Davis. His 10-point output against the Thundering Herd was a season-high.
