Quinones Leads Puerto Rico to Gold Medal

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic – Incoming Florida Atlantic men's basketball freshman guard Felipe Quinones played a starring role in helping Puerto Rico take gold at the 25th Central American and Caribbean Games.
In Monday night's championship game, in which Puerto Rico defeated the Dominican Republic, 94-75, Quinones had a team-high 25 points alongside a game-high nine assists with just one turnover. He shot 8-of-14 from the floor, including 5-of-8 from long distance, and made 4-of-6 free throws.
Quinones and Puerto Rico dominated the tournament, going 5-0 and outscoring opponents by exactly 200 points in its five victories. The 6-foot-5 point guard scored in double digits in every game, averaging a team-best 14.0 points per contest on 54.9% shooting, and efficiently led the team's offense, with 30 assists (another team high) versus just nine turnovers during the five-game win streak.
More than 5,400 athletes in 40 sports are taking part in Santo Domingo 2026, the 25th Central American and Caribbean Games and centennial anniversary of the inaugural event. Puerto Rico took gold in both men's and women's basketball, among its 18 first-place finishes and 72 medals earned to this point.
Quinones and the Owls will soon return as a squad to Boca Raton, with the 2026-27 season – the third under Head Coach John Jakus – set to begin in early November.
