BOCA RATON --Â The Florida Atlantic University men's basketball team broke the school record for 3-point field goal percentage in a 96-67 blowout victory over Charlotte Monday. The Owls will look to remain hot when Western Kentucky visits FAU Arena Thursday evening.
FAU was 16-of-21 from 3-point range Monday afternoon, shooting over 76 percent from behind the arc. The Owls were also over 50 percent from inside the arc and 12-of-13 from the free-throw line.
The FAU-WKU tilt is slated for a 7 p.m. ET tipoff. The game will be heard in the South Florida area on Fox Sports 640 AM and will be telecast nationally on CBS Sports Network.
While the Owls are coming off a huge home win, the Hilltoppers dropped their last outing, a 65-60 home defeat to North Texas.
FAU was victorious in its last outing against WKU. But that was almost two years ago. The last time the Owls and Hilltoppers hooked up was Jan. 30, 2020 on Abessinio Court, as FAU scored a 69-65 victory.
The Owls will conclude a stretch of five games in 10 days when Marshall visits The Burrow on Saturday. That contest will also mark the conclusion of a three-game homestand for FAU.
School Record Shattered vs. Charlotte
The Owls were 16-of-21 from 3-point range vs. Charlotte Monday for a .762 percentage from behind the arc. That crushed the previous school record of .706 (12-of-17, 2.18.06 vs. Kennesaw St.) which stood for nearly 16 years. The Owls are one of the more prolific 3-point shooting teams in C-USA. FAU ranks No. 3 in the league and No. 55 in the nation in 3FG/game, averaging 9.1. The Owls are also No. 3 in C-USA and No. 76 in the nation in 3FG%, hitting at a .360 clip.
Cleaning the Glass
Rebounding has been a point of emphasis for the Owls the last two seasons, and the message has been received. The Owls are currently No. 1 in CUSA and No. 61 in the nation at +5.4. In all but three games this year, FAU has tied or outrebounded the opposition. FAU has owned the edge by 10 or more six times, with a high of +17 (at UNM). On the offensive glass, FAU is No. 4 in CUSA and No. 114 in the nation at 11.2 offensive rebounds per game.
A-Mart Special
Alijah Martin has stepped up in a big way during his second year as an Owl. After averaging 4.2 points per game in his first season, the second-year freshman is putting up 13.7 points per contest so far this season. Martin scored a team-high 20 points vs. Charlotte Monday, giving him seven straight games in double-figure scoring. He has reached double digits in 13 of 17 games this year. He tallied 10+ points just 4 times in 21 games last year.
Seeing the Forrest for the Three's
Michael Forrest is one of the most prolific 3-point shooters in Conference USA. He's currently No. 4 in the league and 47th in the nation in 3-pointers per game (2.82), No. 3 in CUSA in 3-pointers attempted (128). His .375 percentage. from beyond the arc is No. 4 in C-USA and No. 80 in the nation. At 214 career 3-point field goals, he sits third all-time in FAU history.
Forrest scored 27 points, including 6 3-point field goals, against Marshall in the C-USA opener. It was the 15th time he has scored 20+ points in his FAU career and the 6th time has has made 5 or more triples. Forrest has hit at least one 3-pointer in 91 of 105 career games and has made at least one in 67 of 72 games over the past three seasons.
