BOCA RATON, Fla. – For the third straight postseason, a member of the Florida Atlantic University men's tennis team has been voted by Conference USA coaches as C-USA Newcomer of the Year.
Kevin Huempfner follows in the footsteps of
Maxime Lapraille (2020) and
Mehdi Laalej (2019), after a campaign where the sophomore transfer led the Owls in wins in his first year with the squad.
Of Huempfner's 11 singles victories, five were at No. 2, and he also held a 5-1 record at No. 3. He had a five-match winning streak early in the season, and wrapped the year winning five of his last eight singles contests. The native of Neckartailfingen, Germany also totaled the most doubles victories for the Owls, with 10; he was 5-0 with partner
Hunter Robbins, and won five matches as well with
Alvaro Fernandez Horta.
"This is a well-deserved award for Kevin," said head coach
Ricardo Gonzalez. "He had a great year and definitely improved tremendously as the season progressed. Kevin definitely put in the work on court and was always looking for ways to improve his game. Kevin has many more goals to achieve and I am sure this is only the beginning to a great future ahead of him."
Additionally on Tuesday, the Owls earned Second Team honors on both the singles and doubles sides. Lapraille finished out his FAU career by being a part of both, as part of the latter in a doubles combination with
Filip Krolo.
Lapraille and Krolo were the Owls' No. 1 doubles duo, pairing on the top court for all but two of the team's matches. Of the completed contests, the two picked up five victories, one of which was over the No. 38-ranked doubles team in the nation, from USF. That was as part of a stretch where the pair won four of six contests in the early going.
In singles, Lapraille began the spring nationally ranked at No. 122. He won six matches in the top singles slot, including over opponents from Arizona State, Stetson, Georgia Southern, and South Alabama. Then, on back-to-back days to close out the regular season, he topped his Temple opponent; the first match was straight sets, while the second was a comeback battle in three to clinch the team win for his third three-set victory of the year.
"Max and Filip have been playing No. 1 doubles for two seasons," added Gonzalez. "They have incredible chemistry and understand each other's games very well. They are a very good doubles team and are very deserving of this award.
"Max is one of the best players in the country and he is very deserving of this award also. Max will be missed tremendously and we wish him the very best in his to chapter of life."
