HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Florida Atlantic University men's soccer team (5-3-2, 2-3 in Conference USA) was held off the scoreboard at No. 13-ranked Marshall (7-2-2, 4-0-1 C-USA) early Saturday afternoon to fall, 1-0. FAU allowed just one of Marshall's 23 shots on the day to find the back of the net, but that proved to be all the Herd needed to hand the Owls their third loss of the season.
Neil Strauber matched a career-high six saves in the match.
Â
The Owls struggled to find its shot all afternoon, as they were outshot 23 to four in the match. In the 11th minute, the reigning C-USA Offensive Player of the Week
Ivan Mykhailenko had a beautiful look on a header, but the attempt was just too high and hit the crossbar. Mykhailenko and Célestin Theodore, Jr. also got shots blocked in the first half. Strauber came up with a huge save in the 36th minute off a shot from Milo Yosef, the C-USA Preseason Offensive Player of the year, but just minutes later, Marshall's Joao Souza tapped in a team-effort goal to go up 1-0 at the 41st minute.
Â
Marshall had an opportunity to extend its lead at the 57th minute off a free kick, but Strauber got a piece of the ball for one of his six saves on the afternoon. The Owls were limited to finding equalizing opportunities, as the squad was outshot 15-1 in the second half. FAU put up a fight against top-ranked Marshall, but were unable to click on offense to earn valuable points in the C-USA standings.
