BOCA RATON, Fla. – For the first time this year – and the only such occasion all season long – the Florida Atlantic University baseball team will host a normal three-game set at FAU Baseball Stadium this weekend, beginning Friday night. The Owls play Seton Hall on Friday-Saturday-Sunday at the team's usual home start times of 6:30 p.m., 4 p.m. and noon, respectively.
Because of the odd permutations of the season, other series this year will either be split up home and away (like the opening weekend at and versus UCF, and upcoming against Florida Gulf Coast), and once the Owls move into Conference USA play, all weekend sets will be four games (and with different first pitch times).
TICKETING NOTE: All three games this weekend have REACHED CAPACITY for sold tickets. Student tickets may still be available at the gate.
Owls' Midweek in Review
The Owls (3-1) won a pitcher's duel on Tuesday night, outdueling FGCU in Fort Myers, 3-1. Five FAU pitchers combined to string along 10 Eagle hits, and only a first-inning solo home run. Bobby Morgensen's two-run home run in the third proved to be the deciding blow in the road win. In the victory, reigning and defending C-USA Hitter of the Week Nolan Schanuel added two more hits to make for four multi-hit games to start his collegiate career. He is batting an even .500 on the season (10-for-20).
Owls' Weekend in Preview
Seton Hall (1-1) split their Opening Day doubleheader this past Sunday at home in South Orange, New Jersey. The twinbill had twin 3-2 scores, the first in favor of the Pirates, the second going Hofstra's way. Last year, Seton Hall was 6-8 before the halt of the season; BIG EAST coaches picked the squad third in the league's preseason poll. Graduate outfielder Tyler Shedler-McAvoy was chosen as Preseason Co-Player of the Year, and he and first baseman Matt Toke were both unanimous choices to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team.
Weekend Probable Starting Pitchers
- Friday: FAU – Jacob Josey, RHP (0-0, 1.80) vs. HALL – Tyler Burnham, LHP (First app. of '21)
- Saturday: FAU – Javi Rivera, RHP (0-0, 10.38) vs. HALL – Nick Payero, RHP (First app. of '21)
- Sunday: FAU – Matt Sparling, LHP (0-0, 5.40) vs. HALL – Cole Patten, RHP (0-0, 1.80)
In eight previous meetings, FAU holds a 6-2 all-time edge in the series, with all games held in Boca Raton, and the Owls winning each of the last four. In 2018, it was a home sweep, by scores of 4-2, 11-3 (in eight innings) and 10-0.
