BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University men's golf team began its 2021 season on familiar greens. On Monday, the Owls played an exhibition match with Notre Dame at Boca Raton's Osprey Point Golf Course.
Each team saw six golfers play 27 holes on the day.
Enrique Dimayuga,
Davis Lamb,
Max Sturdza,
Alex Maguire,
Sully Zagerman and
Drayton Joseph competed for the Owls.
"I think today was a great day to get back out there, and I know a lot of our guys were excited to get out there and have some competition today," FAU coach
Ryan Jamison said. "We're definitely appreciative of Notre Dame and their ability to come down here and play 27 holes today.
"I think it was an excellent day all around because we got a great idea of where we're at as a team," Jamison added. "We certainly have a lot of things to get better with, but with a day like this so early in the season, it really lays out the foundation of what we need to be successful this year. I definitely think that our guys are up to the challenge. I think our guys are very hungry. I think they've done a great job in the fall of working hard and I think they're ready to go this spring."
This match gave Lamb, a Notre Dame graduate transfer who owns the third-lowest career stroke average (72.77) in program history, an opportunity to compete against his former team.
The Owls will wait over a month before their next scheduled tournament. Â On Feb. 19, they will begin the three-day Desert Intercollegiate in Palm Desert, California. Wyoming is hosting the tournament at the Classic Club.
Monday's exhibition marked FAU's first team competition since March, as the COVID-19 pandemic forced a premature end to that spring season and the ensuing fall. The return has Jamison grateful to the people who helped make it happen.
"We're very grateful for the FAU athletic department and all their hard work," Jamison said. "Obviously, there's a lot of moving parts that go into being able to play competitive golf this time of year with everything that's gone on with COVID. But we're very gracious for all the work our FAU athletic department has done to be able to put us into position to be able play today. And we are going to continue to do our best to do our part to continue to play."
