BOCA RATON, Fla. – As part of Tuesday's announcement of the 2019-20 men's tennis All-Conference USA awards, Florida Atlantic University
Maxime Lapraille has been voted by the league coaches as Co-Newcomer of the Year. Additionally, the junior native of Ophain, Belgium, was selected as Second Team All-Conference in singles.
Lapraille began his Owls' career by posting four singles wins in the fall, including beating the nation's No. 11 player, Philip Henning from the University of Georgia, at the ITA Southeast Regionals. He also took tournament victories over opponents from Florida State and Tennessee, and came out of the fall ranked No. 58 in the nation in singles by Oracle/ITA.
He would then move into dual match play in the spring and post four more singles wins, all at No. 2. Against his former South Alabama squad, he recorded perhaps FAU's biggest win of the year, when in a match tied 3-3 against the Jaguars, he clinched the team victory with a 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 decision. He would go on to make it a three-match streak with a win over DePaul.
"This is a well-deserved accomplishment for Max," said head coach
Ricardo Gonzalez. "Sadly the season was cut short, but I am confident he has a lot more left in the tank and he will continue to do big things for FAU. I am excited to see what he will continue to bring to the table."
This is the second straight year an Owl has earned this superlative accolade, as grad student
Mehdi Laalej earned 2019 C-USA Newcomer of the Year honors. Lapraille is due to return to the courts for FAU in the fall for tournament play.
