BOCA RATON, Fla. – Less than a week removed from its impressive showing last tournament, the Florida Atlantic University men's golf team returns to competition Sunday at the Tiger Invitational by Jason Dufner. The Owls will play on the par-72, 7,289-yard Grand National Lake Course in Opelika, Alabama.
FAU coach
Ryan Jamison described the tournament's field as "stacked," as along with the Owls it includes top-ranked teams such as No. 40 Arkansas State, No. 10 Auburn, No. 41 James Madison and No. 52 Charlotte. Also competing are Louisiana-Monroe, Kentucky, South Alabama, Chattanooga, Southern Miss, Louisiana Tech, Georgia State, Mercer, Morehead State, Toledo, Western Kentucky, Kennesaw State, North Alabama and Austin Peay.Â
In FAU's most recent tournament, the Fort Lauderdale Intercollegiate, the team surged to a second-place finish by posting a 16-under-par 848. Freshman
Max Sturdza led the effort, shooting a 7-under-par 209 to finish sixth individually. Conference USA named Sturdza its Golfer of the Week for his performance.
Two other FAU freshmen joined the top 10,
Enrique Dimayuga (tied for eighth) and
Alex Maguire (tied for 10th), but Jamison still thinks his team can improve heading into the three-day Tiger Invitational.
"A lot of momentum coming from last week, but I still feel like we haven't played our best golf yet," Jamison said. "It would be great to see all five guys step up this week."
