BOCA RATON, Fla. – After a weekend against the No. 2 and No. 9 teams in the nation, Florida Atlantic University baseball returns home to host No. 1 and No. 6 on back-to-back nights. FAU (7-3) will battle No. 1 Florida (11-0) on Tuesday in West Palm Beach at FITTEAM Ballpark of the Palm Beaches; on Wednesday, at FAU Baseball Stadium, it's the Owls versus No. 6 Miami (8-3).
Ticket note for Tuesday in West Palm Beach: FAU students do not get in for free, but can get a $5 discount at the gates when showing their Owl Card.
Owls' Weekend in Review
FAU lost both ends of a Friday doubleheader in Tallahassee, to No. 2 Texas Tech, 7-1, and No. 9 Florida State, 5-1. The weekend ended with a 16-6 loss on Saturday to FSU. The finale began with two first-inning home runs, by Francisco Urbaez and Bobby Morgensen. Wilfredo Alvarez reached base six out of 12 plate appearances over the weekend.
Owls' Midweek in Preview
After last weekend's sweep of Troy, Florida has matched their best start in program history, also beginning both the 1989 and 2002 seasons at 11-0. The Gators are ranked No. 1 in Monday's USA TODAY coaches' poll, the first released since the regular season began, as well by Baseball America, D1 Baseball, and NCBWA. They are No. 2 in the Collegiate Baseball poll.
Two weeks ago, Miami was the nation's No. 1 team, but were subsequently swept at home by UF. Since, they have won four in a row, including all three against Towson in Coral Gables this past weekend. The Hurricanes' current high-water mark is No. 6 by Baseball America, and they also come in at No. 7 by D1 Baseball, No. 8 by NCBWA, and No. 9 by both Collegiate Baseball and the coaches in the USA TODAY poll.
Midweek Probable Starting Pitching Matchups
- Tuesday: FAU – Marc DeGusipe, LHP (0-0, 10.12) vs. UF – Jordan Butler, LHP (0-0, 0.00)
- Wednesday's matchup is TBD for both FAU and UM
The Gators lead the all-time series 21-9, though FAU has won two of the last three, with wins at the 2018 Gainesville Regional and last year in the regular season at Gainesville as well. That latter matchup was a thrilling 13-11 victory, featuring a Morgensen grand slam midway through, and a four-run FAU ninth to complete the comeback.
UM's advantage in the series is 64-18. FAU took the three-game series sweep in 2018, and UM won two of three last season. The last contest, in Coral Gables, was a 6-4 Owls' win in early April.
