MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. –The Florida Atlantic University softball team (6-10) went 1-1 on the second day of The Spring Games at Madeira Beach. FAU had two very close games starting the day out with a 6-5 tough loss to Iowa. The Owls sealed their fate in the second game defeating Incarnate Word 3-2 finishing out the day 1-1.
How It Was Decided
Game 1 vs. Iowa
The Hawkeyes were quick to get things started scoring two runs in the first and three in the second inning to give the Owls a 5-0 margin for the Owls to come back from. Being down by five was no big deal for FAU as they rallied at the top of the fourth scoring five runs to tie the game at 5-5. Kaitlyn Burke leads off with a single starting the momentum. Sami Williams came into pinch run, scoring on a bases-loaded walk to Sommer Baker and begin the come from behind rally. With bases still loaded, Gretchen Ebert ground out allowing Myah Murray to score and bring the Owls within three. Ashleigh Jennings walked to load up the bases for Sara Berthiaume. With two outs and bases load, Berthiaume hit a 3-run RBI double to tie the game at 5-5. The score remained tied until the bottom of the fifth when Iowa scored off an RBI single to capture a 6-5 win.
Game 2 vs. Incarnate Word
At the top of the second, Murray singled through the left-field side on a 2-2 count to get the game rolling. After an error from the Cardinals' pitcher, Murray moved to third and scored on another error to take a 1-0 lead.
Baker singled up the middle in the fourth inning and worked her way around the bases stealing second and scoring from a Jennings single then a stolen base from Jennings forcing the Cardinals catcher to throw to second allowing Baker to score and take a 2-0 lead.
Like in the beginning, another Owl reached on an error and Ashlee Patterson stepped in to pinch run. With speedy work from the runner, Patterson stole two bases and scored on an RBI double down the left field line from Baker giving FAU a 3-0 cushion that they later needed.
In the bottom of the inning, Incarnate Word scored two to cut the Owls lead down to 3-2 scoring on two FAU errors.
