MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. –The Florida Atlantic University softball team (6-11) closed out The Spring Games at Madeira Beach with a 3-2 devastating loss in extra innings to South Alabama on Sunday afternoon.
Â
Â
Game 1 vs. South AlabamaÂ
The Owls attacked first as Sara Berthiaume singles to get the momentum going. With Berthiaume and Jolie Duffner both in scoring position, Kaitlyn Burke steps to the plate and singled to center field allowing Berthiaume and Duffner to score and take a 2-0 lead.Â
It was a quiet game that remained at 2-0 until a solo shot for the Jaguars over the right-field fence to cut FAU's lead in half at the top of the sixth.Â
The top of the seventh with bases loaded Lynn Gardner walks a run in to tie the game at 2-2 and send the final game into extra innings.Â
Due to the international tie-breaker rule, South Alabama starts with a runner on second to begin the eighth inning. Gretchen Ebert took a line drive and a ground out to get out of the inning not allowing the Jaguars to score. At the bottom of the eight, Ashleigh Jennings started on second base for FAU and a sacrifice bunt from Berthiaume moves Jennings into scoring position. Burke steps to the plate and sends a hit into left field and a diving catch from South Alabama's left fielder sends the game into the ninth still tied at 2-2.Â
The Jaguars take the lead in the top of the ninth scoring on an RBI single to make it 3-2. Danielle Bieberle takes her spot on second base moving to third from a sac squeeze from Myah Murray, but that was the Owls had in them falling to South Alabama 3-2 on the final day of The Spring Games at Madeira Beach.Â
Â
Â
•    Berthiaume continued to lead the way going 2-3, hitting a .441 batting average
•    Murray and Ebert each went 1-3 from the plate, Murray hitting the only double of the game
•    Burke went 1-4, bringing in the only two runners for the OwlsÂ
•    In the circle, Gardner took the loss pitching a season-high of nine innings, earning seven strikeoutsÂ
