BOCA RATON, Fla. – Golfer
Sully Zagerman is entering his senior season at Florida Atlantic University, but the growth he's seeing makes him wish it was his first.
"It's (going) in such a great direction that I wish I was a freshman," Zagerman said of FAU's golf team. "These freshmen have it so good.
"They've got a new athletic complex," said Zagerman, referring to the Schmidt Family Complex, "a dedicated athletic staff – just a complete 180 [degree change] from where I was freshman year."
Zagerman says second-year coach
Ryan Jamison is "the difference." After playing for three coaches in four years, Zagerman sees that difference clearer than most.
Jamison joins in the fun, too.
"It's good to have a coach that's a friend, and someone that's going to be there for you regardless of a good or bad day on the golf course," Zagerman said.
In Zagerman's free time, he enjoys bowling, watching football and going to the beach with his teammates. They may see each other "all day" on the course, but their bond transcends it.
"We've created a family here, and that's led us to get better," Zagerman said, "and we're going to continue to get better based off being a family and picking each other up."
Zagerman says Jamison is "dedicated unlike any coach I've had at FAU." With his and the entire staff's dedication, Zagerman believes FAU can compete for national championships in the near future.
Getting FAU on that path is something Zagerman will always cherish.
"It's been an honor to be a part of the upbringing of this program, and see it rise and be a part of that rise," Zagerman said. "It's cool; it's something I'll always look back on as one of my favorite experiences at FAU: Being able to boost this program up, and when I watch them win a national championship on TV, I can be like, 'I was a part of that.'"
But first - Zagerman will lead the Owls into this week's spring season opener at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate Stretching Feb. 21-23, the 7,305-yard, 54-hole tournament will be played at the Classic Club in Palm Desert, California.
The Desert Intercollegiate is the first of many highly competitive tournaments on FAU's schedule. To prepare for it, Jamison has his players focusing on one day at a time.
"I want our guys to be focused on themselves and committed to the process of getting better at golf," Jamison said. "If we grow every day and do things the right way, we will accomplish some great things undoubtedly. We have already done that, so why stop now?"
In addition to host Wyoming and FAU, the Desert Intercollegiate field is made up of Auburn, Boise State, Colorado, Colorado State, Fresno State, New Mexico State, Seattle, South Dakota State, Southern Utah, TCU, UC Riverside and UC Santa Barbara.
"We expect to compete to win, and grow, event to event throughout the whole spring season," Jamison said. "Our guys have worked very hard in the last month and we have practiced for what lies ahead."
