BOCA RATON, Fla – The Florida Atlantic University men's golf team, led by freshman
Alex Maguire, finished 13th at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate in Palm Desert, California. Maguire shot a team-best 5-over-par 221, tying for 47th in the three-round tournament.
"I think all of our guys would obviously tell you that we had a disappointing finish, but we received a lot of great reps," said head coach
Ryan Jamison. "That's college golf for you, you have to have a short memory and get ready for that next event. That's all we can do. We have a resilient group in our starting five and they will not lay down."
No. 19 Auburn (842) won the team competition and Wyoming's Tyler Severin (9-under-par 207) took individual honors, on the par72 course.
FAU's
Max Sturdza (3-over-par 222) shot an impressive 2-under-par 70 in the final round, surging him ahead 22 spots, from 82nd to 60th. Finishing one stroke behind,
Sully Zagerman, who tied for 65th with an 8-over-par 224.
FAU held its own in a competitive 21-team field, which included No. 5 Colorado State, Auburn and No. 50 Charlotte.
The Owls return to South Florida for their next tournament: a two-day event Loyola is hosting March 2-3 at the Fort Lauderdale Country Club.
