BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic University men's tennis head coach
Ricardo Gonzalez continues to build the program's roster for the upcoming spring, adding on graduate transfer Carles Sarrio on Wednesday.
Sarrio comes to Boca Raton most recently from SMU, where two springs ago, he was named First Team All-AAC (American Athletic Conference). The native of Spain began his collegiate career at Auburn, and all told – in tournament play and dual match – has 68 career collegiate singles victories under his belt.

This past abbreviated spring, his second as a Mustang, Sarrio earned seven singles victories, two at No. 1 and five at No. 2. He went an unblemished 6-0 in doubles play as well. In tournament play the previous fall, he earned six singles wins, which placed him at No. 37 in Oracle/ITA's final fall preseason rankings.
During his All-Conference campaign, he solely played in SMU's top spot, with a 12-10 dual match singles record and 23 wins overall that season. He had three wins over ranked opponents, including against the No. 4 player in the country. Additionally, with his primary doubles partner, he went 9-5 (and held a 12-10 overall record in doubles in the spring).
At Auburn, he totaled 18 spring singles victories (12 as a sophomore, six as a freshman), and 17 more doubles wins (12 and five, respectively). Prior to coming stateside for college, he was ranked No. 1 nationally in Spain among U18 players, and as high as 73rd overall. He was runner-up at the Spanish Championships in singles, and champion in doubles, and was a semifinalist at the European Summer Cup in doubles as well.
Off the court, Sarrio will soon be a graduate of SMU's Cox School of Business. He has been honored as part of the ITA All-American Academic Honor Roll, as an ITA Scholar Athlete and as a member of the All-SEC Academic Honor Roll.
Sarrio on FAU:
"An opportunity at FAU, irreplaceable. With one more year of eligibility, I had the opportunity to play another season in college tennis. After spending four years competing in two different universities, I realized that the relationship with the coach and the location is very important to be successful both on and off the court. That's why I contacted Ricardo González, FAU head coach. The first impression was really good. Right from the beginning, he helped me to settle in the new place, I knew I made an adequate choice. As for the university, which I did not expect at all, its modernity, and luxurious facilities as well as a great location with a warm climate that allows me to perform on the court and feel at home."
Gonzalez on Sarrio:
"Carles is one of the best competitors I have ever seen. His work ethic, determination, and passion for the game is incredible. This is why he is currently one of the best college players out there. He still has many goals to achieve and I am sure the best is yet to come.
"Not only does Carles excel on the tennis court, but he also is very driven in the classroom. He will graduate from SMU's business school with a very high GPA. Carles has the full package to be a successful student-athlete. I am excited to welcome him to our family and I am looking forward to further help him develop his person and his tennis game."
Sarrio joins three
previously announced newcomers –
Kevin Huempfner,
Nicolas Jadoun and
Finn Stodder – for the spring, alongside eight returnees from the abbreviated 2019-20 season.
