BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic men's golf incoming freshman
Jake Hibbert dominated the
Golfweek Miami Amateur, winning the tournament and posting a course-record 10-under-par 61 in Round 3. The Warrington, England native recorded a three-round 206 to beat the No. 2 finisher by one stroke.
The 61 that Hibbert posted is historically significant at FAU. It's three strokes better than the current lowest round by an FAU player: Nicolai Sylverstein's 64 in the second round of the 2002 Stetson Intercollegiate.
"What an unbelievable round by Jake today," FAU coach
Ryan Jamison said. "To be able to get to double-digits under par in a competitive golf round says a lot about the mental capability of Jake, along with the physical. I know he has worked very hard on various parts of his game and to see it all come together for one day must have been an incredible feeling."
Senior
Patrick Poate also showed well at the tournament, tying for fifth with a two-under-par 211. The top-five finish is Poate's second this month. He finished third at last week's
Sandestin Amateur.
The Golfweek Miami Amateur took place Oct. 29-30 at the Miami Shores Country Club in Miami Shores, Florida.
FAU men's golf is not participating in collegiate tournaments this fall, but its golfers' recent amateur performances suggest the team is aiming for new heights this spring.
