BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University men's soccer team (3-3-0, 0-2-0) earned a 3-1 win against FGCU (3-4-1) on Wednesday night. The Owls' three goals were a season high for FAU with two goals from Ivan Mykhailenko.
How It Was Won
The Owls dominated possession in the first half and it showed with two first half goals. In the 12th minute, Mykhailenko put the Owls on a board. Tom Abrahamsson found Alex Alexis streaking towards the box. Alexis took one touch and found Mykhailenko for the score. In the 28th minute, Mykailenko found the back of the net again after booting a shot off of an Edgardo Obregon cross.
In the second half, FAU added another goal this time from Axel Pantaleon. Alexis and Mykhailenko once again played a part in the action. Alexis got a takeaway from a FGCU defender in the midfield and drove towards the goal. He crossed into the box, finding Mykhailenko who headed it into Pantaleon's direction. Pantaleon took one touch and sailed it past the Eagles' keeper.
A few minutes later, a FAU player was given a red card and the Owls were down a player for the remainder of the match. FGCU took advantage, outshooting FAU 9-4 in the half but the Owls allowed only one shorthanded goal.
Of Note
The Owls' three goals were the most in a match by FAU in three years. The last time FAU scored three was September 27, 2016 against Stetson
Mykhailenko had five points on the night, bringing his season total to 10. His four goals lead the team. Out of FAU's seven goals this season, Mykhailenko has scored or assisted on all but one
Alexis had two assists on the night, making three on the season
Obregon secured his first assist of the season on the Owls' second goal
Hagay Jalon had eight saves on the night and picked up his second win of the season
