FAU Falls in Overtime to No. 11 UCF

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University men's soccer team (3-4-0, 0-2-0) dropped its Tuesday matchup to No. 11 UCF (7-1-1, 1-0-0 American) by a score of 3-2 in overtime. The Owls will look to bounce back from the tough loss, as they prepare to face Charlotte on Saturday night for a Conference USA matchup at FAU Soccer Stadium.
FAU did not mess around at the start of the match, scoring in the first minute of the game off a goal by Edgardo Obregon. The goal was Obregon's first of his FAU career, which was set up by Alex Alexis, who now has four assists on the season. The early lead did not last for long, as UCF responded less than a minute later to knot the game up, 1-1. The score would remain at a standstill for the rest of the half.
The Owls started the second half off with a vengeance, as Jose Alastuey scored his first collegiate goal in the 48th minute of the match. Ivan Mykhailenko set up the opportunity for Alastuey to put the Owls back on top, 2-1. FAU was riding on the 2-1 lead late into the game until a costly penalty in the box at the 85th minute lead to a penalty kick try for UCF, which was good. All knotted up at 2-2 after 90 minutes, the Owls headed into their first overtime game of the season, but were unable to stop the Knights' momentum. Despite a hard-earned effort by the Owls' defensive front, FAU fell 3-2 in the 94th minute following a shot by UCF that made its way to the back of the net.
"I'm really proud of the way the guys fought tonight," said men's soccer head coach Joey Worthen. "We scored two great goals and competed the whole night against a very good UCF team. It hurts to come out on this side of it, but we will learn more from this and be better going forward."
The Owls will be back at FAU Soccer Stadium Saturday night for another Conference USA matchup against No. 9 Charlotte. The match will commence at 7 p.m. and admission is free to all fans.
