MACON, Ga. & ELM GROVE, Wisc. – The Florida Atlantic University men's tennis team split up for the opening weekend of the fall individual season. Half of the team participated in the Gridiron Classic hosted by Mercer College, highlighted by a run to the semifinal round by the doubles team of
Yovan Lambros and
Hunter Robbins. The rest plied their craft in the Milwaukee Tennis Classic, and that event included singles wins by newcomer
Maxime Lapraille and
Alvaro Fernandez Horta.
Notables:
- In Macon, Lambros and Robbins posted wins over duos from Winthrop (7-5), North Florida (6-4) and FGCU (6-2), before falling in a tough matchup in the semis to UNCW, 6-4
- Also in the doubles draw there, Luis Fernandez Labarta and Bryan Kulikov picked up a 7-5 win to move onto the next round
- Ivan Morin-Kougoucheff, in Flight C, would go on to win his consolation bracket, topping an Alabama State foe, 6-2, 6-1
- After all were edged in their first singles matchup (though all three took the decision out to three sets), all three singles entrants won their Flight A consolation openers: Lambros (7-5, 6-2 over a Winthrop opponent), Kulikov (6-1, 6-2 over Alabama State) and Fernandez Labarta (6-4, 6-2 against Kennesaw State)
- In Wisconsin, Lapraille overcame some tough opposition from Tennessee in the first round of singles, 6-3, 7-6 (4). He fell in the next round in a tiebreak against the No. 3 overall seed, from Arizona State
- Fernandez Horta also faced off against an opponent from UT, and picked up a straight set win, 6-2, 6-4. He would be eliminated by the bracket's No. 9 seed, from Notre Dame
- Jason Legall took his opening round adversary from Kentucky to three sets, but fell (5-7, 6-2, 0-6)
- In singles consolation, Thomas Guy had a back-and-forth affair versus a competitor from IUPUI that went to three as well, but came up short (7-5, 1-6, 6-10)
- Legall and Lapraille teamed up and had a heartbreaker in doubles, losing out to a pair from Illinois, 9-8 (6)
Head Coach Ricardo Gonzalez:
"Many positives to take from this weekend. While I felt like we could have done better, we will learn and grow from this weekend. We need to improve in many areas of our games but we will definitely take it all in and make sure we get to work on the little details. That's what its all about."
