2019-20 Men's Tennis Schedule
BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University men's tennis team begins the fall portion of their schedule this weekend, as the entirety of the team's 2019-20 slate has been officially released.
The fall individual events starts with a split trip, with some of the team heading to Macon, Georgia for Mercer's Gridiron Classic, and others in Wisconsin for the Milwaukee Tennis Classic. Both begin on Friday and continue throughout the weekend.
Other tournaments in the next couple of months will take place both in and out of the state: the ITA Men's All-American Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma; The Bedford Cup in Tallahassee and ITA Regional Championships in Gainesville; and the Georgia Southern Championships in Statesboro, Georgia. More events for the fall may be scheduled in the coming weeks.
Dual match play starts in early January, the first two again emanating from Tallahassee and Gainesville, taking on Florida State and Florida, respectively, on Jan. 10 and 11. The following week features the home opener, with the Owls hosting ETSU on Jan. 17, and USF comes to the FAU Tennis Complex two days later.
"We have one of the most competitive schedules in the country so we will work hard and prepare properly to give ourselves the best opportunity to have a successful season," said head coach
Ricardo Gonzalez, back for his seventh year atop the program.
All told throughout January, February and March of 2020, there will be eight home matches. Following those aforementioned two to start the slate, and after a trip to Fort Worth, Texas for the ITA Kickoff Weekend, are three home contests in a row: Florida Gulf Coast on Jan. 31 and a doubleheader day against South Alabama and DePaul on Feb. 8.
After a road trip of five consecutive matches away from Boca Raton, it's three straight opportunities to see the team at home, beginning with another doubleheader on March 14, versus Cleveland State and Army. The next Thursday, it's a Conference USA matchup, Owls vs. Owls, with FAU hosting Rice.
A trip to Tampa to face off against USF on March 21 comes right before FAU hosting a Conference USA pod, where four teams battle round-robin style over a three-day period (April 3-5) in preparation for the league's postseason championship two weeks later. The other three squads will be Charlotte, Old Dominion and Middle Tennessee.
Two road matches will precede the postseason (at Tulane on April 11 and a rematch against South Alabama the next day). The 2020 C-USA Championship, hosted by Charlotte, is set for April 17-19.
"I am extremely excited for another year ahead of us. Every season has its own charm and we will make sure we enjoy the journey," said Gonzalez.
