Football Holds Player Media Day, Cousart Awarded Scholarship

Wednesday's practice was a typical day for the Florida Atlantic University football team with a different twist to the end, once again orchestrated by head coach Lane Kiffin.
Â
Once the Owls went through their paces, practice came to a close with the traditional team post-practice gathering talk and review by Kiffin. This time, Kiffin needed an accomplice for his plan. The head coach's ally was the least likely to person to operate the foil, receiver Dante Cousart.
Â
The back story is, Cousart is one of the players that everyone has come to expect to wear a smile, offer a handshake or to generally cheer up an otherwise bland day. He is a player that had just broken into the 2018 lineup when he suffered a season-ending broken leg on a punt return. Yet, Cousart still wore a smile to the practice field, while on crutches, despite fighting disappointment with his luck.
Â
Kiffin, who had laid out his plan prior to practice with Cousart, reviewed the day and then berated the receivers, eliciting a response from Cousart that was not the kind of response a coach would expect or tolerate, nor one that the 120-plus folks on the practice field would expect from Cousart. Following Cousart's defense of his unit, the recent graduate (with one year of eligibility remaining) from Jupiter, Florida, was dismissed from the team's huddle. He gamely left, successfully pulling off his part of the acting job, only to hear over his shoulder Kiffin say to the team, "Go get him and tell him he is being put on scholarship."
Â
Following the celebration the Owls were dismissed for lunch with nearly 30 players remaining to join the media for a "players-only media day roundtable".
