Owl Review
The Owls (17-9) come into the postseason having won nine of their last 11 matches, including three of four matches in a C-USA pod in Charlotte. Prior to that, they defeated their first round opponent, UAB, in mid-March in Boca Raton by the score of 6-1.
Five Owls have double-digit singles wins in the dual match season. No. 1
Jason Legall has 13 wins, 11 at the top slot, and the leading spring winner has been
Mehdi Laalej at 19-2, including a 12-1 mark at No. 3. Next is
Alvaro Fernandez Horta with a 15-4 singles record;
Kirac Bekisoglu has recorded a dozen singles wins, 10 at No. 2; and last but not least,
Ignacio Garcia picked up his 10th victory of the year in a C-USA win over Old Dominion.
The doubles side has been led by Legall and Garcia, ranked No. 90 nationally by Oracle/ITA, and who have combined for 14 dual match wins, all in the No. 1 slot.
Owl Preview
UAB (8-12) also took part in a late-season C-USA showcase, though it was rain-shortened before their third match could be completed. The Blazers were topped by UTSA and Rice before rain hit Birmingham, and have lost their last six matches overall. The team's top singles player statistically has been Michal Lusovsky, 11-4 (and 7-0 at No. 4). At No. 1 doubles, Lusovsky combines with Roman Postolka and has gone 11-3.
The winner of the Friday opener advances to the semifinals to play either No. 4 Charlotte (8-14) or No. 5 Rice (13-11), Saturday at 1 p.m. Eastern. The 2019 C-USA title match is scheduled for Sunday at noon Eastern.
