BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The Florida Atlantic University softball team (15-17, 3-5 C-USA) dropped both games of Saturday's doubleheader against WKU (25-5, 8-0 C-USA). In game one, the Owls were outhit by the Hilltoppers 14 hits to four to run away with a 10-3 victory.
Skylar Whitty (5-2) and Kennedy Sullivan (14-2) had a pitchers' duel in game two, but WKU had the edge for a 2-0 win.
Game 1
Key Plays:
The Hilltoppers scored two runs a piece in the first and second inning to jump in front with a 4-0 lead. FAU cut the lead in half in the top of the third inning following
Jolie Duffner's RBI single to score
Madisyn Palmer and
Carolyn Rosa. The Hilltoppers then answered in the bottom of the inning with five runs off of five hits and one error to lengthen the lead, 9-2. In the top of the fifth inning, the Owls captured a double steal with Palmer stealing second and Rosa taking home to put the third run on the board for the Owls. WKU's Rebekah Engelhardt came up with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth inning and the Owls were unable to make up the runs they needed, dropping the first game, 10-3.
Notables:
- Palmer had two stolen bases in the game. This marks her seventh multi-steal game of the season
- The Owls turned their 17th double play of the season in the bottom of the first inning. This was the first time in 29 games, WKU grounded out into a double play
- Rosa captured her first extra-base hit of the season after coming up with a double in the top of the fifth inning
- Duffner's two RBI in the game extends her season total to nine
- Mia Olson got the start and re-entered in the bottom of the sixth inning. She gave up one earned run and a walk. Abigail Morgan and Kelsey Morrison both recorded strikeouts
Game 2
Key Plays:
WKU's Kendall Smith captured an RBI single and Engelhardt came up with an RBI double, which was all the Hilltoppers needed to pull out the 2-0 win. The Owls left runners on base on five different occasions during the contest to be shutout for the fifth time this season.
Notables:
- The Owls fielded their 17th double play of the season, which was turned by Whitty, Samantha Lageyre and Whitt
- Although Whitty took the loss, she gave up just one earned run, two walks and added three strikeouts. Her season ERA is at 2.00, which leads the pitching staff
- Kaitlyn Burke delivered two hits in the game, with one of those being a double. She leads the team with seven doubles on the season
- Duffner is on a six-game hitting streak after delivering three hits between Saturday's two games
