CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Florida Atlantic University softball team (9-9) added another one to the win column on a chilly Sunday morning against Fairfield, 12-4 in six innings. FAU brought the heat from South Florida to the plate, delivering 13 hits in the game to close out the Carolina Classic.
Madisyn Palmer also broke the school record for career stolen bases after stealing three in the game.
Â
Quotable:
"We always want to win on Sundays and we certainly did that!" said Head Coach
Joan Joyce. "The hitting we did today was really good and [
Mia Olson's] big home run was great. [Olson] pitched a really good game and did a good job of getting us out of the jam at the end there."
Â
Key Plays:
In the top of the first inning, Palmer reached the bases on a walk, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by Fairfield's shortstop.
Samantha Lageyre then grounded out to the pitcher, which was enough to score in Palmer and give the Owls an early 1-0 lead. The lead didn't last for long, as Fairfield responded in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single by Mikayla Rubin to knot things up. In the top of the second inning, Palmer singled on a bunt to move
Fayth Davis to third, who had previously reached on an error. Following a wild pitch, Davis scored to regain the lead, but in the bottom of the inning, Fairfield tied things up again off a wild pitch.

The Owls brought the fire to the plate in the top of the fourth inning when, with the bases loaded,
Samantha Lageyre singled to right field to send Davis and
Carolyn Rosa home.
Mia Olson took the plate next and on a 0-1 count, she delivered a three-run home run to right field to elevate the Owls' lead, 7-2. In the top of the fifth inning with the bases loaded, the Owls added two more runs off of Olson's RBI single and
Jolie Duffner's walk. The Owls were not quite done in the top of the sixth inning, as
Tyler Colby delivered a base hit to the third baseman and
Maya Amm reached on a fielder's choice to score in two runs following another throwing error by the Stags. Fairfield added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, but it wasn't enough to keep the game going, as FAU wrapped it up early in six innings, 12-4.
