BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University softball team (10-10) split its first two games of the Parents Weekend Tournament on Friday night. FAU dropped the first game against ECU, 12-5, but came back in their night cap against Stony Brook to claim a 7-3 victory.
"I think we would have stayed in the first game a little better if we hadn't given up that grand slam," said Head Coach
Joan Joyce. "We came around in the second game though and we will be back to work."
Game 1
Key Plays:
ECU struck first with an RBI single by Rachel McCollum, but the Owls answered back in the bottom of the first inning following
Samantha Lageyre's sacrifice bunt to score
Madisyn Palmer. In the top of the second inning, ECU's Ashleigh Inae hit an RBI single and later in the inning, Rachel McCollum delivered a grand slam to extend the Pirate's lead, 6-1. ECU then scored three more runs in the top of the fourth inning to lengthen the lead, 9-1. When it looked like the Owls would fall to the mercy rule in the bottom of the fifth inning,
Mia Olson came up with a solo home run and
Kaitlyn Burke delivered an RBI single to keep the game going. In the top of the sixth inning, ECU brought in three more runs, but FAU did not let up following Lageyre's double to score in
Ashleigh Jennings and
Fayth Davis in the bottom of the inning. The Owls fought until the end but could not come up with the major come back they needed to drop their first game of the tournament, 12-5.

Angela Agurkis and
Carolyn Rosa walked with the bases loaded,
Kelsey Morrison and
Maya Amm reached on errors by the shortstop, and Morrison later scored on a wild pitch. The Owls hung onto a 6-1 lead until the top of the third inning when Stony Brook's Taylor Pechin singled to left center to bring in two runs and make it a 6-3 ball game.
