BOCA RATON, Fla. – On the heels of a perfect 5-0 week, and with Florida Atlantic University baseball now having won eight in a row and of 11 of 12, a member of the team was bestowed an individual honor on Monday. Junior second baseman Francisco Urbaez is the latest recipient Conference USA Hitter of the Week, as announced by the league office.
Urbaez hit safely in each of the Owls' five wins, towards a .611 average (11-for-18), scored eight runs, and had seven RBI. In fact, he both scored a run and had an RBI (at least one, in both categories) in every victory. To kick off the week, he hit home runs in each of the midweek wins over Quinnipiac, going 1-for-1 with three walks and two runs scored Tuesday, and 2-for-4 with another walk Wednesday.
The native of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, would then go on to have multi-hit efforts in each of the three C-USA wins against Rice. In Friday's 4-2 win, he went 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored and an RBI. He added another double Saturday among three hits (in a 3-for-4 showing), with two runs scored, three RBI and another walk, as FAU clinched the series by a score of 12-7. Then in the capper Sunday, it was another three-hit effort, 3-for-5, with yet another double, scoring twice and knocking in a run, in FAU's 12-4 rout to cement the school's first-ever sweep of Rice.
In addition to batting .611 over the course of the week, Urbaez was on base at a clip of .667, slugged 1.111, and did not commit an error in 17 total chances at second base. Overall on the season, he leads Conference USA with a .435 average, 54 total bases and a .783 slugging percentage, while ranking second with a .512 on-base percentage as well as with five home runs. His 21 runs scored and 30 hits are both third, and his 18 RBI ranks seventh.
The Owls go on the road for four games this week, first at Florida Gulf Coast Tuesday night. Next week is a four-game homestand, beginning Wednesday, March 27, hosting Miami. Get tickets by calling 1-866-FAU-OWLS or by visiting baseball's ticket website.
