BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University men's soccer team (6-7-1, 2-4-0) will host Old Dominion (3-10-1, 1-4-1) Friday night in a matchup with important C-USA tournament implications. First touch is set for 7 p.m. with Senior Night festivities beginning 16 minutes prior.
In the Owls' previous C-USA match against UAB, the team came away with a huge win coming in the 84th minute of the game.
Alex Alexis broke away in the box to set up for a perfect opportunity for
Jean Paul Rafols, who found the back of the net for his first goal of the season. The 1-0 score was all the Owls needed to pick up their second conference win.
Ivan Mykhailenko has been the team's leader in goals and points since the first game of the season. The junior leads the way in goals (7), points (17), game-winning goals (3) and shots (29). In the conference, Mykhailenko is tied for second in goals, second in game-winning goals and fourth in points. Alexis has also been a key piece to the Owls' offense, as he leads the team with seven assists, which is the third most in the conference. His 0.58 assists per game is second in the C-USA and ranked ninth in the NCAA.
Alonso Coello Camarero has been the Owls' leading midfielder all season long, taking 16 shots and playing 1,130 minutes, the second most on the team.
FAU's backline has stepped up in the latter part of the season. In the past five matches, the Owls have held opponents to three goals, while tallying three shutouts.
Adam O'Sullivan has played a team's most 1,212 minutes, playing 11 out of the 14 games in full. Defenders
Daniel Skistad,
Graeme Pratt and
Tom Abrahamsson have also payed significant minutes on the field.
The net has been shared between
Hagay Jalon and
Daniel Ragoo this season. Jalon has been called for the start in the past three matches, eight overall. He has recorded three shutouts, with two of those against ranked opponents, a 1.43 Goals Against Average and 31 saves. Ragoo has started in six matches, recording a shutout, a 2.11 GAAvg and 30 saves.
FAU continues to outshoot opponents in both periods of games with 75-68 in the first and 94-88 in the second. The Owls have seen overtime three times during the season and are even with opponents with five shots taken amongst the two OT periods. This season, the Owls have faced eight opponents who have been ranked or received votes in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 poll, which makes for one of the toughest schedules in the country.
The Monarchs, who are also vying for a C-USA tournament spot, head into Friday's match with one win and a draw in conference play. ODU has been outshot in both periods, 87-50 in the first and 102-85 in the second, but the Monarchs have more saves than opponents, 55-46. The Monarchs have been fighting for a tournament spot, taking No. 20 Kentucky into double overtime before falling, 2-1. ODU has taken games into overtime three times, all of which went into double OT.
The Monarchs are led by Daniz Dogan, who has scored four goals and two assists for 10 points. Dogan is followed by Jimmy Filerman with six points (two goals and assists apiece). Djibril Doumbia has seen majority of time at net, tallying a shutout, a 2.01 GAAvg and 52 saves. The freshman's saves account for the second most in the conference.
The Owls are going after their first win over the Monarchs on Friday. FAU holds a 0-7-0 record against ODU, as the teams have faced off every year since 2013, the Owls' first year in C-USA. Last season, the Owls fell to ODU on the road, 4-1.
