BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University men's soccer team (5-6-1, 1-4-0) will play in their final non-conference matchup of the regular season at North Florida (4-6-2, 3-2-1 ASUN) Wednesday night. First touch is set for 6 p.m. at Hodges Stadium.
About the Owls
The Owls, who came in at No. 44 in the most recent RPI rankings, are coming off a 1-0 overtime victory over No. 15 Marshall on Saturday night with the upset being the Owls' biggest win since 2000 when they had beaten No. 4 UAB. In overtime, a Marshall player fouled Ivan Mykhailenko in the box at the 93rd minute, setting up for a penalty kick try. Mykhailenko converted to capture his seventh goal of the season, which is ranked second in the Conference USA. The Kyiv, Ukraine native is also leading the Owls in points (17), shots (25) and game-winning goals (3).
Hagay Jalon is also coming off a big performance from last Saturday after claiming his second blank sheet of the year. His performance, which included three crucial saves, helped him receive C-USA Defensive Player of the Week, his second honor of the season. Jalon has accumulated 25 saves for a 1.76 Goals Against Average this season. Daniel Ragoo has also seen time at goal this season. The senior has tallied 30 saves and a 2.11 Goals Against Average along with a shutout this season.
Alex Alexis has been key to setting up opportunities for the Owls. The senior has six assists, which is ranked second in the conference, eighth in NCAA. Alexis and Joe O'Sullivan have taken 15 shots apiece, while Alonso Coello Camarero (14) and Edgardo Obregon (12) follow.
FAU's backfield has been holding it down, especially over the past few matches with Adam O'Sullivan, Graeme Pratt and Daniel Skistad playing in all 93 minutes Saturday night. O'Sullivan leads the team in minutes (1,064) with Coello (1,009) and Tom Abrahamsson right behind him.
The Owls are outshooting their opponents in the first period, 69-62, but slightly fall behind in the second as they are being outshot, 80-78. The team has continued to endure a tough schedule, as eight of their 12 opponents have been ranked or received votes in the U.S. Soccer Coaches poll at one time this season.
About the Ospreys
North Florida checked in at No. 119 in the latest RPI rankings after taking a tough loss at Lipscomb Saturday, 1-0. The Ospreys have taken draws against No. 22 FIU (1-1) and Florida Gulf Coast (1-1), while picking up three conference wins to sit at No. 4 in the Atlantic Sun Conference standings. North Florida has gotten off to a slow start in their matches, being outshot 48-37 in the first period, but coming out hot in the second, outshooting opponents 72-53. The Ospreys have seen overtime three times this year, getting almost double the amount of looks than their opponents (11 shots to six).
Freshman Robbie Soronellas leads the Ospreys with six points, while senior Jake Hawker follows with five. The Ospreys backfield unit has been very impressive all season long, limiting opponents to 13 goals. Goalkeeper Padraic Gilley has had a great season at net, tallying 27 saves and a 0.97 GAA. The redshirt sophomore also has three blank sheets on the year.
Match History
FAU holds the edge in the matchup against the Ospreys, 6-2-0. The last time these two teams faced off was during the 2015 season, which resulted in a 1-0 victory for FAU.
