BOCA RATON, Fla. – Rateb Hussein and Michael Cannatelli of the Florida Atlantic University swimming & diving team have been recognized as the Coastal Collegiate Sports Association Swimmer and Diver of the Week, respectively, as announced by the league Tuesday. Both student-athletes are first time recipients of the award.Â
Hussein got off to a hot start in his first collegiate meet this past weekend. The Cairo, Egypt native found himself on the proverbial medal stand twice, as the Owls took on Florida, who finished No. 5 in the final 2019 TYR Top 25 poll. Hussein placed third in the 200-yard freestyle (1:40.22) and 100-yard butterfly (49.69), with the freshman's time in the butterfly being faster than the top Owl finisher in the event last season.
Â
Cannatelli joined the Owls last January and has shown to be nothing but dominant on the boards. The sophomore finished second in the 3-meter with a score of 315.37, which marked a new personal best by over 42 points. Cannatelli also finished fourth in the 1-meter (250.27) to open up the 2019-20 season against a tough pool of Florida divers.
FAU men's and women's swimming & diving commenced the 2019-20 season against the Florida Gators last Saturday. The women's team tallied five second-place finishes and four third-place titles, while the men's team captured six top-three times and scores.
The Owls will embark on a short trip to Miami next Friday and Saturday for the TYR Fall Classic presented by Omega Timing. The invite will take place at FIU on Friday at 4 p.m. and Saturday at 10 a.m.
